Monterey Museum of Art’s New Exhibit: “Return to the Sea” by Motoi Yamamoto

Visitors to the Monterey Museum of Art will have to adjust their gaze when viewing the latest exhibit, “Return to the Sea.” For the past few days contemporary Japanese artist Motoi Yamamoto has taken residency at the museum to cover the entire gallery floor, not walls, with intricate designs made entirely of salt. His unique works depict scenes of typhoons, hurricanes and galaxies symbolizing life, healing and death.

Want see to see Motoi in action? Stop by during normal museum hours and see this internationally acclaimed artist add touches to his masterpiece through June 13th. And don’t miss the exhibit’s Opening Reception on June 13th at 6:30pm. Guests will celebrate the completion of the project and meet the artist while enjoying light refreshments. Tickets are $10 and free to MMA members.

The exhibit will remain open until August 25th when the entire piece will be dissembled by the community. At 1pm visitors are welcome to help “wipe away” the masterpiece and return the salt to the sea. At 2pm a parade, lead by a Taiko drumming procession will march to the Monterey Commercial Pier where the salt will be returned to the sea as a symbol of rebirth.
