Porter's in the Forest at Poppy Hills Golf Course, Pebble Beach

17-Mile Drive and legendary golf aren't the only reasons to head into Pebble Beach anymore. Tucked inside the wooded area of Pebble Beach lays one of my new favorite foodie finds, Porter's in the Forest.
Not only do they have killer views of the recently renovated Poppy Hills Golf Course, but the cuisine mashes up unexpected creations thanks to star Chef Johnny De Vivo, formally of locals' favorite Casanova in Carmel.

Porter's in the Forest features a kick-back and contemporary dining room, expansive outdoor patio with views of the Pebble Beach's Del Monte Forest.

The farm-to-table and "California Artisanal" dubbed menu is taken to a new level by featuring not only local ingredients but in-house crafted bread, condiments and even Johnny's cured meats; his smoked bacon is just sinful!

Cocktails for lunch are perfectly acceptable (and strongly encouraged) at Porter's. Here you will find a stellar specialty cocktail selection with ingredients made from their backyard, literally! The Lavender Fields Lemonade uses homemade infused lavender syrup with sprigs plucked straight from the course.

One sniff of this libation and I was immediately transported back to summertime shenanigans. Just a few sips later I realized I needed a base in my belly before I started belting out Jimmy Buffet tunes out loud.

I started out with the grilled crab flat bread and wild arugula salad, it was being shared so don't judge! The flat bread isn't something I would normally order but my friendly waiter Laurence had sold me with shitake mushrooms provided by their local forager.

Doughy yet crisp flat bread slices were topped with crème fraiche, hunks of roasted garlic cloves, a heaping amount of crab and fresh fungi. What I didn't expect were the hidden slices of Meyer lemon which gave the pizza intermittent bursts of flavor, truly a welcomed surprise!
The Manquita Farms arugula salad captured fall flavors at its best. Fresh greens came strategically presented with juicy pear slices, luscious goat cheese, colorful pomegranate seeds, and crunchy Spanish almonds all lightly dressed in refreshing pear vinaigrette. Let's just say I have added a new addition to my Thanksgiving Day menu.

For the main event we indulged in the semolina and ricotta gnocchi with a side of charred cauliflower. Fluffy potato pillows emerged from a sea or short rib and broccoli rabe, my fav! This cozy dish would make a perfect appetizer to share around the inviting outdoor fire pits.
Can't get your kids to eat their veggies? Porter's charred cauliflower is a colorful masterpiece and the flavors are out of this world! The accompanied creamy yogurt sauce provided a winning balance with the smoky paprika oil, sure to have your kids screaming for seconds.
Since I ate all of my vegetables I figured I had earned dessert, especially since the warm brownie was calling my name before we even ordered drinks. The warm and comfy creation did not disappoint with hunks of gooey chocolate chips topped off with creamy homemade mascarpone ice cream. Now if I only I had room for another cocktail....

Porter's is open daily for breakfast from 6am-10:45am, lunch from 11am-3 pm and a special twilight menu from 3pm-7pm.

Now Open: Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach

Poppy Hills Golf Course - well known as one of the popular and prestigious courses in Pebble Beach, reopened its doors on April 4th after a year long top-to-bottom redesign with all sorts of jazzy upgrades.

The renovation was supervised by course architect Robert Trent Jones II, who created the layout back in 1986. For the renovation, his desire was to restore each hole to its natural elevation along the floor of the Del Monte Forest, dampen the doglegs and contours and remake all 18 greens with bent grass. The catalyst for the renovation was to find a way to improve drainage while conserving water.
In addition, Robert built a new 11th hole, which is now the shortest par 3 at Poppy Hills; created a new version of the 12th hole, which now tees off toward a picturesque ocean view and rolls downhill; and revitalized a seasonal creek that cuts in front of the new ninth green. In addition, the facelift includes vast improvements to not only the water system but to all teeing areas and bunkers along with widening the fairways and eradicating unnecessary sections of rough.
The course is run by the Northern California Golf Association and is open to the public with rates much more affordable than some of its neighbors down the street, starting at $210 for a tee time. Par at Poppy Hills has dropped from 72 to 71, but the yardage has increased from 6,863 to 7,002

If perfecting your golf game is more important than the views, Poppy Hills has you covered as it is the official headquarters of MTT Performance. "Make The Turn" is a high-performance coaching initiative for dedicated golfers to unlock their potential, while dramatically elevating their enjoyment for the game. Coach Jeff Ritter integrates training in golf skills, mindset, fitness and nutrition into a creative and engaging game-changing experience sure to boost your game.

Whether or not you are in to golf everyone should sample the flavor creations by Chef Johnny De Vivo (formally of Casanova in Carmel) at the recently renovated restaurant at Poppy Hills. Porter's features a kick-back and contemporary dining room, expansive outdoor patio with views of the course and outdoor fire pits are just the beginning to a diner's delight!

The farm-to-table menu is taken to a new level by featuring everything made from scratch including bread, beignets and even Johnny's cured meats; his smoked bacon is just sinful!

Don't skip out on breakfast as Johnny dishes up his freshly Memphis-style smoked corned beef served with hash; talk about being as far from your average snack shack at the golf course!
Porter's is currently open for breakfast, lunch and occasional dinner programs.

The Bench at The Lodge at Pebble Beach

When asked if I wanted to attend a pre-grand opening tasting of Pebble Beach Resort’s newest restaurant my reaction was simple, “Duh!” Any reason to go Pebble Beach, especially to try its busiest new restaurant, is a no-brainer in my book.

The Lodge at Pebble Beach

My co-worker and I arrived at The Lodge at Pebble Beach and made our way down to The Bench. Once inside we were immediately awe-struck with the epic vistas of the 18th hole of Pebble Beach Golf Links. The interior of The Bench complements the amazing view just outside. The open floor plan is clean, crisp and inviting, definitely a place you could just relax.

The Bench at The Lodge at Pebble Beach

After oohing and ahhing over the scenic panorama our friendly hostess sat my fellow diner and I down at a cozy table. Luckily I was quick and scored the seat overlooking the patio and beautiful view. Our waitress, Jackie introduced herself and advised us to order 3 dishes: an appetizer, main entrée and dessert; tough gig! After a quick glance at the menu I realized this was easier said than done, everything looked scrumptious.

Sample Menu

For the appetizer I thought I would try something out of comfort zone and opted for the tomato-braised eggplant. I have never had eggplant but figured this would be the place to give it a shot. As for the entrée, the garlicky Farfelle was calling my name. We even got a sneak peek of the dessert menu which almost made me want to have the meal in reverse. After much deliberation my co-worker and I decided on the apple crumb cake and roasted strawberries with cheesecake ice cream.

Portobello Mushroom Fries with Cheddar-Parmesan Dip

After a short wait Jackie brought out our first courses. Boy was I glad that my dining partner ordered the Portobello mushroom fries! These plump fungi were perfectly coated in fried goodness with an amazing cheddar Parmesan dip to top it off. I couldn’t keep my hands off of them!

Tomato-Braised Eggplant

I finally moved onto my eggplant. This too looked delicious, even for something I am not accustomed to. I was surprised by the meaty texture of the eggplant and loved the roasted tomatoes and added capers but the creamy ricotta cheese really made the dish!

Farfelle: Shrimp in a Garlic White Wine Sauce

Next up were the entrees. I was happy to see that my pasta dish was served up with a hefty portion of shrimp. The buttery sauce was swimming in garlic which also made me one happy girl.

The Burger with Sea Salt Fries

My co-worker ordered “The Burger” which was served on what looked like an English muffin topped off with Gruyere cheese and pickled peppers. I was able to snag a bite and boy was this thing juicy! The peppers gave it just the right amount of kick.

Warm Apple Crumb Cake with Caramel Drizzle

And for the grand-finale…dessert! The long awaited sweet concoctions arrived and poor Jackie could barely put the plates down with our forks attempting to dive in. The warm apple crumb cake and ice cream came with a side of caramel which was just plain sinful. The thick apple slices infused in the pecan crust tasted just like Thanksgiving!

Roasted Strawberries, Cheeskcake Ice Cream and Balsalmic Reduction Drizzle

The roasted strawberries weren’t bad either. The sweet fruit was served in a warm streusel topped with cheesecake flavored ice cream and a balsamic reduction glaze. The cheesecake ice cream was out of this world! I wanted to take some home to make a milkshake.

The Bench at The Lodge at Pebble Beach

I will definitely be returning to this “causal yet sophisticated” eatery at Pebble Beach. You can’t beat the famous view, kick back atmosphere and ambrosial menu. And did I mention they have an awesome drink menu?

The Bench officially opens August 8, 2012

You can taste all of the wonderful offerings beginning August 6, 2012. For reservations please call 800-654-9300. Bon appetit!

The Tastes of Spanish Bay in Pebble Beach

Not one, not two, but three highly acclaimed restaurants call The Inn at Spanish Bay at Pebble Beach Resorts home. Whether you are in the mood for lasagna, sushi or something deep-fried there is truly something for every palate. Did I mention that they are all served with a view of The Links at Spanish Bay and the Pacific Ocean?

Pèppoli at Pebble Beach

Pebble Beach, California or Florence, Italy? That is the question as soon as you step foot into Pèppoli; this Tuscan-style eatery resembles a high-end villa with all the authentic décor one could hope for. The rustic color palette puts your mind at ease while the aroma from the open terra-cotta tiled kitchen gives you immediate hunger pangs.

When I stopped by for a visit with Chef Angela Tamura she whipped up quite the feast, as if I was a long lost Italian relative, and the ricotta cheese crostini was just the beginning. The crispy Italian bread was lathered in homemade ricotta cheese and topped with a buttery caramelized onion. Delish!

Soon after her award-winning lasagna (at least in my eyes) came out piping hot. The pasta’s crunchy shell gave way to an oozing inside of mozzarella cheese, thick tomato sauce, succulent sausage and the smell of Italian herbs.
Lasagna Tradizionale at Peppoli's
Time for some protein! The bistecchina, a.k.a. Angus steak, was no joke. This honkin’ piece of meat was cooked to perfection on the oak grill and then sprinkled with a dash of sea salt. The accompanied slices of caramelized onion and creamy blue cheese made the smoky flavors from the steak pop. I can only imagine what this meal would have been like with a glass of vino from their extensive wine collection!

Roy’s at Pebble Beach

It is amazing that just to the side of this Tuscan haven sits a much different International delight. Roy’s at Pebble Beach may overlook an Scottish-influenced golf course but the cuisine is straight out of the Pacific Islands. Roy Yamaguchi’s masterpiece of a menu includes a blend of unique flavors in what he dubs as “Hawaiian-fusion.”

The contemporary and modern design puts you on island time but the high-paced energy surrounding the kitchen keeps things alive. The master behind Roy’s creations in the Pebble Beach kitchen is Chef Pablo Mellin. During a recent visit Pablo noted some of their specialty items like their various sushi rolls, bento boxes and mixed plates.
Chef Pablo Mellin at Roy's
Needing to try some of Pablo’s concoctions I dove into a Lakanilau Roll. This was not your average over-the-counter sushi roll. Dynamite crab, panko crusted asparagus and avocado surrounded in rice and wrapped with a thin layer of, wait for it… Kobe beef! The Kobe beef literally melted in your mouth and the crunch from the fresh asparagus gave this dish an unexpected burst of freshness.

I also had a little tester of their blackened rare ahi. The fresh slab of tuna had a spicy kick to it but the soy mustard butter sauce cooled it all down, I could even gather a hint of a sweet berry as I devoured my tasty morsel.

STICKS

Those looking for a little comfort food can find just that, and then some, at casual hangout STICKS. Here you can easily envision yourself kickin’ back and watching the game, grabbing an ice-cold beer or chowing down on some tasty chicken wings without being judged.
The Links at Spanish Bay
The casual bar resembles a refined Irish pub with epic views of the golfing greens, multiple TV screens, cozy fireplaces and plaid accents scattered throughout. Chef Todd Fisher has succeeded in creating the menu at this down-home grub hub which includes almost every sought after comfort food imaginable. Things like black truffle popcorn, bacon-wrapped meatloaf and country fried chicken with waffles make you feel like you instantly gained five pounds.

Needing some comfort I opted for the blue bacon slider. A rich blue cheese and jalapeno spread was doused on a toasted fluffy bun with salty pieces of bacon and a savory Angus burger on the inside. The collaboration of meat and aioli sauce made my taste buds dance.

The tater tots served on the side were not your grocer’s freezer section tots. I was slightly embarrassed that the guests across from me could hear the deep-fried crunch from across the table but then I realized they were too good to care.
Tater Tots, Blue Cheese Burger, Bacon Lollipop and Fish Taco at STICKS
Did I mention this came with a bacon lollipop? At first bite I was in love- juicy goodness oozed from the core while hints of bourbon and maple were evident in its preparation. Chef Todd Fisher knows his bacon, as he should; he is the host on Destination America Channel’s “United States of Bacon.”
It's Bacon! at STICKS
Next time I am STICK-ing around for dessert; as I was leaving I got a glimpse of the 7-layer carrot cake and warm apple pecan bread pudding, I swear as I walked through the door they were calling my name!
